The Supreme Court will continue the hearing in the Navjot Singh Sidhu case on Thursday.

The two-judge bench, comprising Justice G P Mathur and Justice R V Raveendran, heard the matter on Wednesday afternoon in which Sidhu had challenged the Punjab and Haryana high court order passed last month, which sentenced him to three years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him in a 1989 road rage murder case.

The conviction debarred Sidhu from contesting elections for a period of six years as laid down by the Supreme Court in a landmark judgment.

Harish Salve, senior advocate of the Supreme Court, argued that in a particular case a Karnataka legislator who had been convicted in a rape case had been allowed to contest elections by the Karnataka high court.

Salve will continue the argument on Thursday, and a rebuttal from the Punjab government side will also be heard then.

Although Sidhu was present in the court premises, he chose not to attend proceedings.
