India on Tuesday requested the World Heritage Committee to allow more than two nominations from a country for World Heritage Site.

"We have requested the chairman of the World Heritage Committee to allow India and China to make more than two nominations because of their size, large population and cultural history of several centuries," Minister of Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni said following a meeting with the Committee chairman, Tumu te Heuheu.

At the Souzhou meeting in 2004, it has been mandated that a state party can submit only two nominations per year for World Heritage Sites, of which one site has to be a natural site, and has put an annual limitation of 45 nominations per year.

However, these decisions are temporary and are expected to be reviewed in the next meeting to be held in New Zealand in June-July this year.

She hoped the Committee would support their contention.

"This is an ongoing debate and a temporary proposal. We hope there would be a relaxation," she said.

The Committee has a final say on whether a site could be inscribed on the World Heritage List. Around 21 countries, including India are currently in the list of members of the Committee. It is also responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention and defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance on request from state parties.
