A United States court has allowed a wealthy Indian-origin businessman, Mahender Sabhnani, who along with his wife was convicted of "modern day slavery," to remain in home detention until his sentencing on March 28 but revoked the bail of his Indonesian-origin wife.

Judge Arthur Spatt said he had taken the decision as Varsha was charged with actually torturing the two Indonesian women they had employed as housekeepers and Mahender was accused of allowing it to happen.

The couple was released on 4.5 million dollar bail with strict conditions under which their over a million dollar mansion was turned into a temporary jail and Sabhnanis were paying 10,000 dollars per day for security which kept eye on them to ensure that they do not escape.

Varsha made a futile plea to judge to allow her to remain on bail and her four children sobbed.

One of the couple's daughters Dakshina collapsed in the court. She had collapsed on Monday also when the jury gave the guilty verdict.

The couple faces 20 years in prison.

After a three-week trial, a jury had convicted the multi-millionaire couple, which has a world-wide perfume business, on all 12 charges brought against them by the prosecutors which included forced labour, involuntary servitude and harbouring illegal aliens.

The defense has promised to appeal the guilty verdict.

Sabhnani's attorney had argued that the two women had ample time to escape if they wanted to do so as Sabhnanis were out for long periods of time because of their business.

But prosecutors contended that Sabhnanis had confiscated their passports and they did not know English and hence could not communicate.

The couple was arrested in mid-May after one of the women was found loitering near a restaurant wearing only a towel and pants. Later, during the search of the house by immigration officials, the second woman was found.
