The Bharatiya Janata Party is gearing up for mid-term polls, declared party general secretary Arun Jaitley on Friday.

Addressing a press conference after a two-hour meeting of the party's office bearers at in New Delhi, Jaitley said that the patch up between the United Progressive Alliance allies and the Left parties was fragile and will not last long.

The party has decided to be ready for the poll, which will be held much before 2009 when the next elections are scheduled -- so that it is not left wanting in case early Lok Sabha polls are called.

Vijay Kumar Malhotra, deputy leader of BJP in Lok Sabha, said the meeting of the general secretaries will be followed by meeting of office bearers.

Disagreements between the UPA and Left parties have suddenly raised the expectations of BJP. However, Congress leaders denied there was any possibility of early or mid term poll.

"Alliance options, media management and other related issues concerning elections were discussed," a senior BJP leader said.

The meeting of the party's core group included L K Advani, Rajnath Singh, Jaswant Singh and other top leaders.

The meeting came as the BJP's ties with its oldest ideological ally Shiv Sena, which in July voted for UPA-Left presidential candidate Pratibha Patil [Images], remain strained.

In Orissa, chief minister Naveen Patnaik has recently come under a fierce attack from state BJP vice president Jual Oram over trade agreements.

Barely a month ago, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee refused to join the saffron party in its call for support to Bhairon Singh Shekhawat as presidential candidate.

On the internal front, the party is faced with massive dissidence in states under its governance. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Rajasthan's Vasundhra Raje and Raman Singh of Chhattisgarh and Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi are battling detractors who oppose their leadership and style of functioning.
