India, Russia to boost security ties

This one will please the Left. India and Russia [Images] have agreed to enhance cooperation in security field as National Security Advisor M K Narayanan discussed a range of issues, including counter-terrorism, with his Russian counterpart in Moscow [Images].

Narayanan, on a two-day visit to Russia, had parleys with acting secretary of Russian Security Council Valentin Sobolev, during which they discussed a wide gamut of issues related to practical implementation of the bilateral strategic partnership, a release said.

The sides agreed to enhance cooperation between the two national security councils in view of growing threats to global security.

India and Russia would also try stabilizing of situation in Afghanistan, it said.

"Special attention was paid to the issues of security in Central and South Asia, and coordination of joint efforts in Afghanistan," the release said.

Narayanan and Sobolev said on issues like countering international terrorism, illegal drug trade and other global threats and challenges, India and Russia had identical approach.

Narayanan will meet Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov on Wednesday  to discuss issues, including the price escalation of Russian defence supplies and set the agenda of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's [Images] summit talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin [Images] in November.
