Terming the contents of the CD brought out by the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh as 'inflammatory' and 'offensive', the National Commission of Minorities on Wednesday asked both the Central and state governments to take serious note of the development and its grave implications for communal peace.

'The commission has viewed the contents of the inflammatory and anti-social compact disc as part of the BJP's election publicity in Uttar Pradesh. It contains offensive depiction of the Muslim community and is calculated to incite hatred and disturb communal harmony', the NCM said in a statement.

'The NCM has noted the action taken by the Election Commission of India in the context of the election process currently underway. Given the wider ramifications of the matter, however, the commission urges the Central and state
governments to take serious note of the development and of its grave implications for communal peace', it said.

'This calls for swift and stern action against those who violate the letter and spirit of the Constitution'.

The statement observed that, '"even though the compact disc is said to have been withdrawn, its contents have been
published and broadcast by the media'.

The commission also called upon all civil society groups to join forces to deter and defeat elements promoting
disharmony and hatred.
