Two police officers were on Wednesday suspended for alleged laxity in handling the situation leading to clashes during Milad-un-Nabi procession in Lucknow even as curfew continued in the affected areas of Thakurganj and Chowk for the fourth consecutive day.

Ramanand Yadav, inspector with the Chowk police station, and Station Officer, Thakurganj, Vir Pratap Pandey have been placed under suspension, official sources said.

Meanwhile, tension erupted in Pata Nala area in Chowk late on Tuesday night when some persons started brick-batting from their roof-tops.

The situation was, however, brought under control by the security personnel, they said.

"The curfew will continue till the situation normalises in these areas," Senior Superintendent of Police Jyoti Narayan said.

Heavy police and RAF personnel were deployed in the entire area and only government employees and students were allowed to move out of their homes after showing their identity cards.

Security personnel were deployed on the roof-tops of houses in the congested area to prevent people from resorting to brick-batting.
