The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 173 points at 14,215. The index touched a high of 14,221, and soon slipped into the negative zone. The index rebounded and thereafter exhitbited lacklustre movement for most of the trading day.
Selective profit-taking saw the index slip to a low of 13,917 - down 304 points from the day's high. The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 47 points at 13,995.
The market breadth was marginally negative - out of 2,666 stocks traded, 1,354 declined, 1,234 advanced and 78 were unchanged on Monday.
INDEX MOVERS. . .
ACC and Tata Steel [Get Quote] surged around 3% each to Rs 625 and Rs 494, respectively.
ITC rallied over 2% to Rs 195, and Hindustan Unilever gained 1.7% at Rs 249.
Bharti Airtel [Get Quote], Grasim [Get Quote] and ICICI Bank [Get Quote] advanced over 1% each to Rs 809, Rs 1,937 and Rs 634, respectively.
. . .AND THE SHAKERS
Satyam [Get Quote] plunged 4.7% to Rs 353. Jaiprakash Associates [Get Quote] tumbled nearly 4% to Rs 130, and Maruti [Get Quote] dropped over 3% to Rs 718.
Ranbaxy [Get Quote], Hindalco [Get Quote] and Larsen & Toubro shed around 2.7% each at Rs 347, Rs 110 and Rs 2,577, respectively.
Tata Motors [Get Quote] and Reliance Infrastructure slipped nearly 2% each to Rs 415 and Rs 877, respectively.
Sterlite, BHEL and DLF declined around 1.5% each to Rs 460, Rs 1,684 and Rs 421, respectively.
ONGC [Get Quote] and Reliance Communications [Get Quote] were down 1.3% each at Rs 1,058 and Rs 369, respectively.
VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS
Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 447.20 crore followed by Reliance Capital [Get Quote] (Rs 353.15 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 253.30 crore), Bharti Airtel (Rs 221.80 crore) and Sesa Goa [Get Quote] (Rs 165.50 crore).
Reliance Natural Resources [Get Quote] led the volume chart with trades of around 1.50 crore shares followed by Sesa Goa (1.40 crore), IFCI (86.80 lakh), Jaiprakash Associates (73 lakh) and Idea Cellular [Get Quote] (71.35 lakh).
