Government on Thursday categorically stated that there was no fuel rationing being resorted to in wake of crude touching an all time high of $135 a barrel and it was committed to ensure uninterrupted supplies.

"There is absolutely no move to restrict or ration supplies of any fuel," Petroleum Minister Murli Deora told reporters.

The government, he said, has not issued any direction to any of the oil marketing companies -- Indian Oil [Get Quote], Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum -- to either curtail supplies or sell only a particular kind of fuel.

"The government is committed to maintaining uninterrupted supply of petroleum products to the consumers and has ensured the same even in the face of unprecedented rise in global oil prices," he said.

The government and oil PSUs have shouldered the maximum burden of the highly volatile world oil prices insulating consumers in India from most of the impact.

"There is no restrictions or rationing being done for petrol and diesel. Neither is supply of normal auto fuel being withdrawn from some pumps," said S Sundereshan, Additional Secretary in Petroleum Ministry.

There is no freeze on issue of new LPG connections, he said.

BPCL [Get Quote] Chairman and Managing Director Ashok Sinha said all that the company was doing was planning to meet spike in demand.

"We have accounted for a 10 per cent rise in petrol and 15 per cent surge in diesel demand this fiscal when making inventory supplies. However, petrol demand has shown 12 per cent increase and diesel 22 per cent surge.

"We are trying to ascertain if this is sustainable demand then we need to plan for it so that there are no shortages anywhere," he said.
