With its move to fix minimum wage for millions of expatriate workers facing resistance from Gulf countries, the Indian government has said it is difficult to implement the measure any time soon as many 'stakeholders' are involved.

The idea is "not easy to implement since there are many stakeholders, though the government has been able to fix a minimum wage structure for maids," Vayalar Ravi, the minister of overseas Indian affairs, told PTI.

There are nearly five million Indian working in the Gulf countries, but rising inflation in the region has made the condition of the blue-collar workers difficult since they are unable to save money locally or remit them back to India.

In the recent months, there has been many strikes by Indian workers where demanding a wage hike.

Ravi denied that the government had suffered any setback in its attempts to fix a minimum wage for workers going abroad to prevent their exploitation and said that its implementation would take time.

"The minimum wages for workers as an idea is good, but it is not so simple since there are many stakeholders and the move has to be backed by the various state governments, the trade unions and various host countries," he said.

However, the minister said the various steps taken by the Indian government have helped to check incidents of exploitation of workers.

"Our drive against unscrupulous recruiting agents and the various campaign is yielding results," added Ravi, who is on a private visit to the UAE.

According to the minister, stringent laws will be brought against unscrupulous agents once the Emigration Act of 1983 is amended.
