Air intelligence wing of the customs department seized two Reliance Industries-owned aircraft on Thursday night for alleged evasion of customs duty.

According to customs department sources, the two aircraft were procured by the industrial group headed by Mukesh Ambani for chartered purposes but were allegedly used for personal travel.

As per rules, an aircraft imported for chartered purpose invokes 10 per cent custom duty, whereas for personal use, the duty is a higher 18 per cent.

On seizure of the aircraft, RIL [Get Quote] said in a statement: "The authorities concerned as a matter of routine procedure have sent out notices to several non-scheduled operators.

"As a part of this routine procedure, two of Reliance Commercial Developers Pvt Ltd's aircraft were detained and handed back to the company thereafter. Reliance is fully complying with all procedures as notified by the authorities."
