China's auto output is expected to surpass 10 million units this year, with car production at five million units, the countrys top economic planner said on Monday.
According to the National Development and Reform Commission, automakers produced 9.04 million vehicles last year, a 22.9 per cent year-on-year jump.
"Quantity was not a problem anymore and the automakers should focus more on quality," said Zhu Hongren, Deputy Director of NDRC Economic Performance Department, according to official Xinhua news agency.
Judged against their international counterparts, Chinas automakers still lagged in terms of scale of production and technology, it said.
The auto boom, however, has also brought additional problems in the country which include regular traffic jams and pollution.
