Trial production of Tata Motors' [Get Quote] Rs 1-lakh wonder 'Nano', which was unveiled at the auto-expo in the national capital last month, would start in June or July, a top company official said on Wednesday.

Tata Motors managing director Ravi Kant, who was in Singur to review the progress of the construction of the factory along with other senior officials of the company, told reporters, "We are happy with the progress. Trial production of the small car would start in June or July."

Within two months of start of trial production, commercial production of the small car would begin in the second half of the next financial year, preferably in October, he said.

Kant inspected various facilities such as press shop, welding shop, assembly line, engine and paint shop which were being put up inside the plant premises.

Civil construction firm Shapoorji Pallonji, Tata Motors and the West Bengal government were coordinating the work, he said.

"We do hope the way things are going, work would be completed within time, barring some unforeseen circumstances like rain," he said.

Kant said the company and other agencies involved were putting in place an action plan to ensure that the work progressed smoothly. He also discussed the issue of sewerage inside the plant area since it was a low-lying land.

He said a lot of earth filling would have to be done besides dredging of canals inside the plant area.

A visit to the plant area would reveal that various factory sheds were partially complete, while common infrastructure like roads and other facilities were not yet finished.

Tata Motors showcased Nano on January 10 at an auto show held in Delhi. The company plans to produce 2.5 lakh (250,000) units of Nano from Singur.

A number of auto component manufacturers are also geared up for their manufacturing units near the plant area for the small car.
