Sensex ends down 185 points; DLF plunges 4%

The Sensex opened 81 points higher at 14,563, but soon slipped into a negative zone for a whole day.

The index saw the profit booking in late noon deals in the realty, banking & power stocks. All the other sectoral indices were in red too.

The Sensex moved in a range of 301 points between 14,262 (low) and 14,563 (high).

The index finally ended with a loss of 185 points at 14,297.

The NSE Nifty ended with a loss of 45 points at 4,292.

The market breadth was negative - out of 2,702 stocks traded, 1,568 declined, 1,035 advanced and 99 were unchanged on Wednesday.

THE INDEX SHAKERS...

DLF plunged 4% to Rs 478. Reliance Infrastrustructure tumbled 3.6% to Rs 966.

SBI [Get Quote] declined nearly 3% to Rs 1,331. ICICI Bank [Get Quote] dropped 2.7% to Rs 649. HDFC [Get Quote] slipped 2.5% to Rs 2.286, while Tata Motors [Get Quote] lost 2.4% to Rs 423.

BHEL and Reliance Communications [Get Quote] were down 2.3% each to Rs 1,681 and Rs 397, respectively.

HDFC Bank dropped 1.8% to Rs 1,233, and TCS [Get Quote] was down 1.7% at Rs 818.

Tata Power [Get Quote] and Larsen & Toubro slipped 1.6% each to Rs 1,012 and Rs 2,576, respectively.

Reliance and Ranbaxy [Get Quote] were down around 1.4% each at Rs 2,148 and Rs 511, respectively.

ONGC [Get Quote], Maruti [Get Quote] and ITC were the other major losers today.

...AND MOVERS

Hindalco [Get Quote] gained over 2.1% to Rs 138. Tata Steel [Get Quote] advanced 0.7% to Rs 581.

Infosys [Get Quote] added 0.6% at Rs 1,708. Mahindra and Mahindra was up 0.3% to Rs 576.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Nutek India topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 266.71 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 252.27 crore), Reliance Capital [Get Quote] (Rs 227.31 crore), Vishal Info (Rs 139.95 crore) and Reliance Natural Resources [Get Quote] (Rs 113.60 crore).

Nutek India, also, led the volume chart with trades of around 1.31 crore shares followed by Reliance Natural Resources (1.21 crore), GTL Infrastructure [Get Quote] (78.68 lakh), FSL (74.85 lakh) and Chambal Fertilisers (62 lakh).
