The government on Wednesday asked promoters of the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) to keep in mind local sensibilities during its modernisation amid claims of change of name of the airport.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has strongly refuted allegations that the present name of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is being altered and the location of the statue of the warrior king is being replaced.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has given clear directions that no changes are to be made to the airport which will hurt local sentiments.

"The name of the airport will continue to remain Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai and the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji will always remain at the international airport," an official release said.

The Ministry has clarified that the government has not given any permission for any such change, it said.

Patel has directed promoters of MIAL to keep in mind local sensibilities while undertaking the upgradation and modernisation of the Mumbai Airport, it said.
