Maruti leads Aug car sales growth

Domestic passenger car sales continued to post healthy double digit growth in August at 17.92 per cent led by market leader Maruti Udyog [Get Quote], while the downhill ride for motorcycles continued with a dip of 11.09 per cent.

According to the monthly sales figures released by the Society of Automobile Manufacturers, the total vehicle sales in the country witnessed a dip of 1.67 per cent at 7,39,157 units as against 7,51,775 units in the same month a year ago.

Domestic passenger car sales in the country in August stood at 98,893 units against 83,864 units in the corresponding month a year ago, SIAM said.

Market leader MUL posted a healthy 24 per cent increase in sales during the month at 52,055 units as against 41,728 units in the same period last year.

Industry experts pointed out that MUL's growth had been driven mainly by its agressive marketing. During the month, it had run a scheme -- Smile India Smile --  offering upto Rs 40,000 discounts across various models.

Rival Hyundai Motor India had a marginal improvement at 16,115 units as against 16,067 units in the corresponding month a year ago. Homegrown major Tata Motors [Get Quote], however, recorded a decline of 3.56 per cent at 13,588 units as against 14,090 units.
