With spectrum management by telcos not being up to the standard, the department of telecommunication has now taken upon itself the task of demonstrating to operators how to use the scarce radio waves more efficiently.

DoT has undertaken a study in one of the metros to see how the spectrum could be used better with the same level of equipment employed by operators. It already has completed a similar study in rural and semi-urban areas.

Once the result of these two studies are extrapolated, which is expected next week, the DoT will then orgainse seminars and symposiums to tell mobile operators the ways to use the radio waves more efficiently.

DoT also has a project on hand -- the World Bank-assisted National Radio Spectrum Management and Monitoring System for design, supply, installation and commissioning of an automated system to ensure frequencies are used efficiently by all users. The project has been undertaken by C-DoT.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has also asked the telcos to enhance efficiency in utilization of scarce resources of radio spectrum in its latest recommendations on licensing reforms.
