Maruti sold 60,229 cars, GM 5,817 in Aug

Maruti Udyog Ltd [Get Quote] reported on Saturday a 24.8 per cent increase in its domestic vehicle sales during August at 60,229 units as against 48,259 units in the same month last year.

The company's exports during the month surged 59.6 per cent at 5,739 units compared to 3,596 units in August 2006, MUL said in a statement.

Sales in the A1 segment, comprising MULs flagship entry-level hatch back Maruti 800, dipped 14.7 per cent during the month at 5,480 units as against 6,425 units in the corresponding month last year.

The A2 segment comprising hatchbacks Alto, Wagon-R, Zen and Swift reported a 28.6 per cent increase in sales during August at 41,736 units against 32,466 units a year ago.

Riding on the success of premium sedan SX4, the company reported sales of 4,839 units in the A3 segment, which also comprises sedan Esteem, during the month compared to 2,837 units a year ago, up 70.6 per cent year-on-year.

The MUV segment where the company sells Grand Vitara and Gypsy reported a 45.4 per cent increase in sales to 285 units as against 196 units in August 2006.

Cumulative domestic sales in the April-August period grew 19 per cent to 2,73,672 units as against 2,30,016 units in the corresponding period last fiscal.

Exports during the period under review surged 50.6 per cent at 19,874 units compared to 13,195 units a year ago.

GM car sales up 114%: General Motors India reported on Saturday a 114 per cent increase in domestic sales during August at 5,817 units against 2,720 units in the same month last year.

The company sold 1,547 units of multi-utility vehicle Chevrolet Tavera, 1,567 units of sedan Aveo and hatchback Aveo
UV-A, 741 units of premium sedan Chevrolet Optra and 1,962 units of its mini car Spark during the month, GM said in a statement.

Commenting on performance of GM India, GM India Vice President P Balendran said, "the sales this month clearly reflect the customers confidence in the Chevrolet brand and the consistent growth in monthly sales is a clear indication of the success of all the carlines of GM India."

The cost of ownership programme has contributed significantly to our sales and this stems from the confidence we have in our world-class products and is a testament to the importance that GM India attaches to maximising customer satisfaction, Balendran added.

General Motors India is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation. GM India manufactures the Chevrolet Optra Magnum, Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet SRV, Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Tavera at its facility in Halol, Gujarat.
