Sensex ends up 252 points, SBI zooms 9%

Mirroring weakness in the global markets, the Sensex opened with a significant negative gap of 359 points at 19,365, and soon dropped to a low of 19,256. The index, thereafer, displayed steady movement during the morning session today.

Fresh buying in late noon trades saw the index rebound into positive zone. The buying momentum was so strong that the index rallied to a high of 20,026 - up 770 points from the day's low. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 252 points at 19,976. The NSE Nifty ended at 5,932, up 66 points.

The BSE Bankex zoomed 3.6% to 11,241. The Oil & Gas index surged 1.7% to 11,736. The Capital Goods, FMCG and Realty indices moved up over 1% each to 20,386, 2062 and 10,328, respectively.

Advancing shares were marginally ahead of declining stocks - out of 2,802 stocks traded, 1,399 advanced, 1,340 declined and 63 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS...

SBI [Get Quote] zoomed nearly 9% (Rs 181) to Rs 2,252.

HDFC Bank [Get Quote] and Reliance Energy [Get Quote] rallied 5% each to Rs 1,759 and Rs 1,852, respectively.

ONGC [Get Quote] soared 2.7% to Rs 1,366, and ICICI Bank [Get Quote] surged 2.5% to Rs 1,331.

Grasim [Get Quote], ITC, Infosys [Get Quote] and BHEL advanced 2% each to Rs 3,746, Rs 175, Rs 1,908 and Rs 2,715, respectively.

Maruti [Get Quote] moved up 1.8% to Rs 1,021. Reliance and Tata Motors [Get Quote] added 1.5% each to Rs 2,713 and Rs 755, respectively.

NTPC and Tata Steel [Get Quote] were up 1% each at Rs 235 and Rs 894, respectively.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Bharti Airtel [Get Quote] plunged 5% to Rs 895. ACC and Satyam [Get Quote] dropped 2% each to Rs 1,032 and Rs 462, respectively.

HDFC, Wipro [Get Quote] and Cipla slipped around 1.5% each to Rs 2,653, Rs 492 and Rs 174, respectively.

Mahindra & Mahindra was down over 1% at Rs 756.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Reliance Petro topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 794 crore followed by Reliance Natural [Get Quote] (Rs 605 crore), Reliance Energy (Rs 391.50 crore), Reliance Capital [Get Quote] (Rs 365.50 crore) and Reliance (Rs 293.50 crore).
