Sensex ends up 59 points; HDFC Bank soars 5%

Taking cues from the global markets the Sensex opened with a bang at 14,468 - up 130 points - and soon spurted to a high of 14,527. However, lack of fresh buying at higher levels saw the index display lacklustre movement for most part of the trading day.

Some profit taking towards the end, saw the index pare gains and drop to a low of 14,368. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 59 points at 14,398.

The NSE Nifty rallied to a new all-time intra-day high of 4296. The index, however, ended with a marginal gain of nine points at 4257.

The BSE Auto, Bankex and Healthcare indices rallied over 1% each to 4918, 7564 and 3793, respectively. The BSE IT index, however, was down nearly 1% at 4915.

The market breadth was positive - out of 2,661 stocks traded, 1,470 advanced, 1,094 declined and 97 were unchanged today.

HDFC Bank Shines

HDFC Bank soared over 5% to Rs 1,125. Larsen & Toubro surged 2.7% to Rs 1,785.

Gujarat Ambuja and Maruti rallied almost 2% each to Rs 116 and Rs 825, respectively.

Cipla, Bajaj Auto, HDFC and ACC advanced around 1.5% each to Rs 208, Rs 2,203, Rs 1,845 and Rs 870, respectively.

Reliance Communications and ICICI Bank are up over 1% each at Rs 511 and Rs 922, respectively.

HLL slipped 1.3% to Rs 201. Infosys, Reliance Energy and NTPC dropped 1% each to Rs 1,965, Rs 551 and Rs 162, respectively.

Value & volume toppers

India Infoline topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 134 crore followed by Unitech (Rs 124 crore), Advanta (Rs 120 crore), Reliance Natural (109.50 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 98 crore).

Reliance Natural led the volume chart with trades of around 3 crore shares followed by Reliance Petro (79.55 lakh), Dish TV (60 lakh), debutant Binani Cement (57.60 lakh) and Nagarjuna Fertilisers (46 lakh).
