Watching TV programmes online is catching up big time with the convergence of the television and the Internet. A study by Motorola has revealed that almost half of European broadband users watch television online.

The study carried out across United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain found that the French lead Europe in online television viewing with 59 per cent of the population opting to watch TV online.

Italians and British stood second and third respectively, while only 33 per cent of German viewers watch shows online.

Apart from using the TV to download and view photos, the survey also found that 45 per cent of Europeans expect to make video calls via TVs by 2012.

According to Motorola, this is a result of viewers opting for flexibility of watching programmes at their convenience. People now want to be in control of what they like to watch.

Motorola's IPTV set-top-boxes deliver the television content on the Internet, allowing viewers to switch to portable devices like mobile phones or media players.
