Tata Motors posted 11 per cent increase in total vehicle sales (including exports) during April at 40,486 units as compared to 36,574 in the same period last year.
The company sold 16,842 units of passenger vehicles in the domestic market in April, up 26 per cent over April 2006. It sold 10,870 units of flagship hatchback Tata Indica in the month, up 28 per cent.
Sales in the Indigo family, which comprises of sedan Indigo and station wagon Indigo Marina, were up 2 per cent at 2,632 units.
The Sumo and Safari accounted for sales of 3,340 vehicles, an increase of 49 per cent over April last year. The company sold 1,474 units of SUV Safari up 269 per cent in the month, it said.
Exports in the month grew 13 per cent at 4,037 units in April as compared to 3,572 vehicles in the same month last year. The company said growth in export volume was primarily driven by commercial vehicles.
The company said vehicle sales in the domestic market were impacted, in varying degrees between the commercial and passenger vehicles due to the high interest rate regime affecting retails.
The company's commercial vehicle sales in the domestic market dipped marginally during the month at 19,607 vehicles sold as against 19,674 units in April 2006, a company release said. M&HCV sales declined 14 per cent at 10,392 units while LCV sales grew 22 per cent at 9,215 units, the company said.
