Nearly 900 men and women from the three wings of the armed forces are set to join the corporate world.

Over 90 per cent of those who underwent abridged courses at various IIMs this year have got jobs with salaries ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh per annum.

"Most of the remaining 10 per cent had problems with the place of posting. We are hopeful they will be absorbed in the coming weeks,'' said Maj Gen Harwant Krishan, director-general, resettlement, Ministry of Defence.

Last year, 600 officers had attended the six-month course.

Maj Gen Krishan, who looks after the rehabilitation of nearly 3,000 officers from the three armed forces each year, says the trend is of "strategic consequence."

"Indian defence forces have always remained cut off from industry," he said. "In the next three or four years, we visualise 3,000 to 4,000 corporate warriors holding key positions in the corporate world in India and abroad. This will improve relations between the defence establishment and businesses.''

The officers are also likely to help non-commissioned officers and jawans find jobs. "I have asked every officer to take responsibility for at least ten persons below them," said Maj Gen Krishan.

After the success of the course run by five IIMs and MDI in Gurgaon, XLRI, Jamshedpur and Narsimoonjee, Mumbai, have started similar courses this year.

ICICI, which recruited 200 people from the armed forces last year, has hired 150 this year. The recruits, meanwhile, are already making waves.

Maj Anurag Choksy, International Business Head, NIIT, has achieved his yearly target of Rs 50 crore in three months while Capt Randeep, senior vice-president, Sar Investments, got business worth Rs 45 crore in 30 days.

Maj Karthik, a replacement coordinator for a private company says, "I get five times the salary than what I could have got in case I had continued in my previous job.'' Karthik says people like him move up the corporate ladder fast because of the management experience they get while working in the Army.
