India's industrial output up 11% in Jan

India's industrial production grew by 10.9 per cent in January 2007 compared to 8.5 per cent in the year-ago period led by a robust growth in manufacturing sector.

For the ten-month-period ended January, the index of industrial production (IIP) grew by 11 per cent against eight per cent in the corresponding month last year.

Manufacturing sector recorded a growth of 11.6 per cent during January 2007 as against 9.4 per cent in the year-ago period, while mining sector rose three-fold at 6 per cent from two per cent in the review period.

Power sector grew by 8.5 per cent in January as against 6.4 per cent in the corresponding month last year. During April-January 2007, the manufacturing sector recorded a growth of 11.9 per cent compared to nine per cent in the year-ago period.

The growth of mining sector in the review period went up significantly at 4.5 per cent against 0.6 per cent, while the same for power sector advanced to 7.6 per cent from five per cent. In terms of industries, as many as 16 out of 17 industry group have shown positive growth in January 2007 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures have shown the highest growth of 81.5 per cent, followed by 28.7 per cent in 'Basic Metal and Alloy Industries' and 22.4 per cent in 'Cotton Textiles'. However, the industry group 'Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except cotton)' have shown a negative growth of 89.2 per cent.
