Sensex gains 282 points to 12,697

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 158 points at 12,573. After moving to higher levels, the market witnessed profit-taking and the index dropped to a low of 12,427.

The index, however, bounced to higher levels backed by aggressive buying in technology stocks. The Sensex rallied to a high of 12,760 before settling with a gain of 282 points (2.3%) at 12,697.

The Nifty gained 79 points to close at 3,656.

The BSE IT index zoomed nearly 5% to 4962. The Bankex advanced over 2% to 6353, and the Healthcare index was up over 1% at 3367.

The market breadth was negative - out of 2,584 stocks traded, 1,459 declined, 1,080 advanced and 45 were unchanged today.

IT LEADS

Wipro soared over 8% to Rs 581. Infosys zoomed 5.5% to Rs 2,116. Satyam surged 5% to Rs 434, and TCS added 3% to Rs 1,199.

ACC rallied 5% to Rs 854. Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank advanced 4% each to Rs 718 and Rs 852, respectively.

Reliance, Larsen & Toubro and SBI were up around 3% each at Rs 1,299, Rs 1,428 and Rs 991, respectively.

Cipla and Gujarat Ambuja gained 2% each at Rs 222 and Rs 114, respectively.

Hindalco and NTPC dropped around 3% each to Rs 130 and Rs 133, respectively. Hero Honda shed 2.5% to Rs 667.

Tata Motors and HLL declined over 1% each to Rs 726 and Rs 171, respectively.

VOLUME BUZZERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 151.40 crore followed by Reliance Communications (Rs 127.30 crore), Tech Mahindra (Rs 126 crore), Infosys (Rs 97.15 crore) and IFCI (Rs 87.51 crore).

IFCI led the volume chart with trades of around 3.50 crore shares followed by Essar Shipping (66.75 lakh), SAIL (41.90 lakh), Reliance Natural Resources (38 lakh) and Marico (36.35 lakh).
