The key market indices finished on a divergent note today. While the BSE benchmark index, Sensex, exhibited lacklustre movement through the day, the NSE index, Nifty, zoomed towards the close, thanks to significant gains in Reliance Petroleum [Get Quote] and Suzlon [Get Quote] (both non-Sensex stocks).
The range for the Sensex was just 81 points - from the day's open of 14,479, the index rallied to a high of 14,560.
The index pared gains at close and eventually ended on a flat note at 14,501 - up 13 points.
On the other hand, the Nifty, after a sedate start, witnessed a sharp surge and came within striking distance of the 4300-mark. The index touched a high of 4296, and finished with a smart gain of 27 points at 4286.
The breadth was positive on the BSE - out of 2,693 stocks traded, 1,492 advanced, 1,117 declined and 84 were unchanged today.
NIFTY MOVERS & SHAKERS
Reliance Petroleum soared nearly 6% to Rs 107. Suzlon surged 5% to Rs 1,430. ONGC [Get Quote], Bharti Airtel [Get Quote] and Siemens were up around 2-3% each at Rs 947, Rs 855 and Rs 1,392, respectively.
BPCL [Get Quote], Ranbaxy [Get Quote] and MTNL [Get Quote] dropped over 2% each to Rs 335, Rs 348 and Rs 158, respectively. ACC and VSNL [Get Quote] shed 1.7% each to Rs 846 and Rs 468, respectively.
SENSEX MOVERS & SHAKERS
ONGC and Bharti Airtel surged 2% each to Rs 936 and Rs 850, respectively.
Grasim [Get Quote] and BHEL moved up 1.4% each to Rs 2,496 and Rs 1,471, respectively. Tata Motors [Get Quote] advanced over 1% to Rs 684.
Ranbaxy dropped 2.4% to Rs 348. HDFC [Get Quote], Wipro [Get Quote], ACC and Ambuja Cements slipped around 1% each to Rs 1,880, Rs 509, Rs 846 and Rs 116, respectively.
BSE VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS
Time Technoplast topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 201 crore followed by Indiabulls [Get Quote] Financials (Rs 189 crore), Indiabulls Real Estate [Get Quote] (Rs 124 crore), Reliance Petro (Rs 120 crore) and GMR Infrastructure [Get Quote] (Rs 103.80 crore).
Reliance Petro led the volume chart with trades of around 1.15 crore shares followed by IFCI (1.05 crore), G V Films [Get Quote] (92.60 lakh), IKF Technologies [Get Quote] (83.25 lakh) and Hindalco [Get Quote] (51.65 lakh).
