10 new crop varieties released in TN

In an effort to boost agri sector, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore has released 10 new crops for 2007.

According to the university, a medium fine white rice variety with 9,625 kg per hectare yield is one among the 10 crop varieties released recently.

The new crop releases include blackgram (VBN(BG)5, groundnut-VRI (Gn)6, Bhendi hybrid A (COGhH1) and a jack fruit variety (PLR(J)2.

The university has also released three new farm equipment (power tiller operated slasher-cum-insitu shredder), sugarcane detrasher and a sub-soil attachment for stump removal

Among the new farm management technology introduced on the occasion are shade net technology for sweet pepper and paprika, botanical formulation 'Ilamathi' for higher silk yield and mass multiplication of bamboos.
