Sony India, a leading provider of consumer electronic products, today launched its High Definition digital imaging products, which include four new HD camcorders and three new cyber-shot digital cameras in India.

The company's HD handycam video cameras will be available in the Rs 59,000-69,000 range while its cyber-shot digital cameras will be available in the Rs 25,000-Rs 30,000 range.

"Sony has a strong presence in High Definition digital imaging products across the world. In India, the digital still camera market is doubling every year and we hope to corner one-third of entire digital camera market estimated at 1 million units. We will sell 3,00,000 units of digital cameras in the current year," Sony India's Managing Director, Masaru Tamagawa said here.

"Sony India will be the dominating player in the video camera market too. India's handycam market is estimated at 3,00,000 units and we expect to sell 2,00,000 units in the current year," he said.

"As HD becomes more pervasive in Indian households, the consumer wants to view all content, including photos, in High Definition," he said, adding "HD lets you see a whole lot more-razor sharp reproductions with the minutest of details in crystal clear quality."

Asked about investment plans in India, Tamagawa said, "Sony India has no plans to set up units in India to manufacture HD digital imaging products as it involves very high technology and India is five years behind in adopting the technology."

However, the company will invest US$ 0.5 million in marketing of the HD products in India, he said.

Sony has its footprint across all major towns and cities in the country through a distribution network comprising of over 7,000 channel partners.

As a part of strengthening its distribution network, Sony India plans to add 50 new "Sony World" outlets, apart from the present 250 outlets across the country.

Sony India also has a strong service presence across the country with 21 company-owned and 172 authorised service centres.
