PC sales touch 1.75 mn in Q2

Personal computer sales touched 1.75 million units in the July-September quarter registering a growth rate of 19 per cent year-on-year, while the projection for the fiscal 2007, expected to touch 6.5 million units.

Out of the 1.75 million units, desktop sales crossed 1.5 million units, while notebook sales totalled 0.25 million units.

For the six month period of the current fiscal ending September, the total sales of computers (desktop+notebook) stands at 2.96 million units registering a growth of 19 per cent.

Releasing the figures, hardware industry association MAIT (Manufacturers Association of Information Technology) said the multi-national branch accounted for 37 per cent of the total desktop market in H1, a growth of 14 per cent over the same period last year. The proportion of Indian brands fell from 31 per cent to 23 per cent registering a year on year decline of 23 per cent.

The unorganised segment, which comprises of assembled pieces in the lesser known regional brands and unbranded systems witnessed a growth of over 27 per cent in unit sales and an increase in market share, accounting for 40 per cent of total PC sales in H1 up from earlier 34 per cent.
