Oriental Insurance Company has won the mandate to provide insurance cover to the Indian cricket team, which is flying to the Caribbean to play at the World Cup 2007 from next month.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken an overseas mediclaim cover from Oriental Insurance covering each of Rahul Dravid's boys for a sum insured of Rs 1.1 crore (Rs 11 million).

That means hospitalisation expenses resulting out of injuries, accidents, partial or temporary disablements up to Rs 1.1 crore will be borne by Oriental insurance besides compensation owing to loss of passport, loss of baggage and delayed baggage.

"We have placed the policy with Oriental Insurance to cover our entire entourage of 23 people for the World Cup," Ratnakar Shetty, chief administrative officer of the BCCI told Business Standard. The policy was won amid stiff competition amongst the insurance companies including private sector players.

Oriental would pay for all injuries resulting out of any accidents during the tour, including injuries from beamers. The policy covers the players and back-up staff accompanying the team, including the coach Greg Chappell.

The BCCI also covers all its players under a domestic personal accident policy which is it has been covering for a decade from Oriental for a sum insured of Rs 10 lakh. However, Oriental did not give the premium paid by the BCCI for the personal accident cover citing confidentiality agreement. But insiders say with increased competition from the private players, Oriental had to give a steep discount to its rake rates.

Says Leander Dias, administrative officer of Oriental Insurance, "Both policies have mostly been profitable for Oriental Insurance as none of the players have met with any eventualities."

The OMP will also cover hospitalisation expenses arising out of terror attacks. In the recent tri-series in Malaysia, the BCCI had taken an event insurance policy for match cancellations and refunds from Oriental Insurance as the local match organising body was not financially strong.
