Ahead of the Budget, Finance Minister P Chidambaram came under the scanner at the meeting of the Congress Working Committee on the issue of price rise on Monday.

The CWC meet, presided over by party Chief Sonia Gandhi with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saw members targeting him on spiralling prices, party sources said.

Chidambaram's detailed presentation on the economy and the steps taken to check inflation, which has reached a new high since the UPA came to power, is said to have left many in the gathering unimpressed.

Some members told the minister that the Congress was in the game of electoral politics and could not afford to ignore the common man, they said.

Gandhi, who has been concerned over the rising prices, allowed members to have their full say at the CWC meeting called to review the political and economic situation in the country.

AICC General Secretaries Digvijay Singh, V Narayanasamy, Mukul Wasnik as well as Ram Naresh Yadav, Harikesh Bahadur, Mohsina Kidwai and Satyavrat Chaturvedi spoke on the issue of inflation and the urgent need to curb it.
