The 30-share BSE Sensitive Index or Sensex is having a roller-coaster ride this whole week. Volatility is ruling the markets and leaving most investers confused about their future action.

To clear your doubts, speak to stock market expert Pranav Sanghavi, director, Jitendra Harjivandas Securities (P) Ltd

PRANAV SANGHAVI says,
Hello and welcome to the chat. Let's begin.

joe asked, Hi Pranav, Please suggest 3-5 of your best picks for the long term, and the levels at which i should enter them.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers,  at 2007-08-29 12:08:09Hi Joe. I would look at stocks like L&T, SBI [Get Quote], IDFC [Get Quote], BHEL, DLF, INFY, TCS [Get Quote], RCOM etc. with a 2 to 3 year time frame. If you have a 2 to 3 year time frame then you have to look at PE multiples at the prevailing time and not whether the markets are up or down.
joe asked, do you think the rest of year could be a good time to accumulate IT stocks for long term... if yes, please suggest your best picks.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think so. Atleast it would hold true for the top 3-4 stocks like TCS,Infy, Tech Mahindra [Get Quote], Wipro [Get Quote] etc.
shashwath asked, Hi Sir.. previously also i have asked this, but i didnt get answer from .. this time atleast plz help me.. I have Teledata 200@91... What i should i do know if i book loss which stocks i can invest?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I have been told they are going in for a demerger of three of their companies and those companies will get an automatic listing. There fore you will get shares of three more listed companies without paying anything. What you could do is buy at lower levels to average out. But I would hold for the free shares of the demerged entities.
Prasanna asked, Hi Pranav, Please let me know about investing in Sunil Hitech Engineers Ltd [Get Quote] at current level.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I am sorry I don't follow that stock.
sidk asked, Hi Pranav, I have Tech Mahindra at Rs 1600.Should I hold it for another 1 year. Also I am planning to buy Opto Circuit. Can I enter into it at Rs 425.Pls let me know
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Hi Sidk. I think they have performed well in dollar terms and look to continue to do so. Especially since they have bagged a US$ 200 million per year contrat for 5 years from BT. You could surely hold.
sachin asked, Hi Pranav, Pls suggest the future outlook of IFCI in next two months
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think in the next two to three months the players looking to acquire a stake will come out in to the open. Also the investors should get a rough idea of the kind of valuation the company is getting. It looks to hold its current valuation and maybe add another 10 to 15%.
g asked, Hello. Can you please give yr views on HUL for the medium term (upto 5 years) and long term (upto 10 years). Thanks.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Hello. First of all I would never call 5 years a medium term outlook. Secondly I think over the next 5 years HUL if it delivers on the growth path the company claims to achieve then it could give sizable returns. With the recent announcement by the company of a buy back it has definately shown that the company feels the stock is undervalued.
GLAIND asked, WHAT IS IS FUTURE OF UNITECH, TECH MAHINDRA
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I already just spoke about Tech Mah. Unitech I think is deifnately in the top 3 players in the listed real estate players along with DLF and GMR. I would surely hold on to Unitech especially since it is quoting cum bonus.
GLAIND asked, IS IT THE RIGHT TIME TO BUY IFCI, RNRL
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would buy them with atleast a 6 month outlook. RNRL maybe with a longer term.
joe asked, Is RPL a good buy at these levels for atleast 2-3 yr outlook
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Yes surely.
sunpal asked, what is the future of INFOSYS [Get Quote]? TODAT ITS AT 1850
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, The tech stocks will remain underperformers for a while. But beyond that I think the forntline companies will surely resolve teh Ruppee appreciation issue. So with a 1 year outlook and above you could look at it.
amar asked, Are FIIs playing indian markets? It seems they control the direction of the market. Indian investors just follow them and lose out.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Unfortunately, FII's have become a dicisive force in the Indian stock markets. They do have the might of the funds and besides our insurance sector virtually nobody has the power to withstand or go against the FII's. We have seen that in the past also like in May'06 they had sold over Rs. 8000 crores in a single month and the markets corrected by over25%. So we must watch closely on the FII's investments.
amit asked, hi pranav pls suggest me about idfc i buy at the rate of 132
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would hold on. It is a fundamentally strong stock, it is relatively new therefore very little NPA issues. Also it has a strong management and its been delivering steady growth in results.
Mats asked, plz give details abt SBI.. I have 20 @ 1544
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, SBI is the largest Bank. It has a strong balance sheet and has been delivering fantastic results. The CRR hikes and Repo rate hikes have affected the stock marginally and of course the market correction has also. But with a possibility of the interest rates coming down over the next 6 months I think the stock makes a good bet.
patel asked, hi pranav, can u tell me about the future prospective of praj ind.?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think Praj has given good results and looks to continue doing so. It has decent backlog of orders even though the sugar companies are facing a slump in the sugar sector I don't think they will stop their expansion plans on the bio fuel projects which Praj supplies.
rajib bhaumik asked, i have 20 shares of Hero Honda @ Rs. 735/-. I am a long term investor. Pl. advise
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Over the next few quarters I think the two wheeler segment will remain an underperformer. It has now become evident that it is one of the most sensitive segment affected by the interest rates. I think lower interest rates would boost their sales again. If you look at Hero Honda with a time frame of over 1 to 2 years then it could surely be looked at.
santosh asked, hi pranav, pls suggest me a future of Four Soft [Get Quote]
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would rather switch to a frontline tech stock and ride out the Rupee appreciation phase.
LVJ asked, IVRPRIME, SHALL I BUY AT CURRENT LEVELS
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, IVR Prime does have a decent background and has delivered good results of its previously listed company IVRCL. They also claim to have decent land banks and wish to leverage the same. It could be looked at within the real estate players along with DLF, Unitech etc.
sharad asked, hi i have bought icici@826 , tisco @572 and idbi @120 .What do u say should i hold or sell
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would surely hold all the three. They are fundamentally good stocks and corrections like these should not deter your faith in them.
vaishnavsantosh asked, Hi, Sir, I want to invest Rs. 25000/- time horizone is 1-3 years pls. suggest me which fund i should buy. Tnxs.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would advise you to get into any large cap diversified fund like the ones offered by DSP ML, HDFC [Get Quote]< Templeton etc.
rams asked, please advise on ispat industries
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would surely exit and look at a Sail [Get Quote] or Tisco [Get Quote].
Govind asked, Hi Pranav, What are your views on Gujarat NRE coke [Get Quote], Praj Industries [Get Quote] and Nagarjuna construction? I am a long term investor. Thanks in advance.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Hi Govind. Gujrat NRE I would surely hold on to. They have a captive requirement of all its production so they should deliver steady growth. Nagarjuna has just seen an interest from Blackstock one of the largest PE Funds in the world. I would surely look at the stock. I am sure Blackstone will not pick up a stake without thorough due dilligence.
suhas asked, i m having cipla @ rate 200/- what to do & ashok leyland @39/-
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, In the short term they may both remain underperformers.
newcommer asked, hello pranav
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Hello newcomer, yes I am here, what is your question?
Govind asked, Hi Pranav, Will Gujarat Ambuja [Get Quote] will be a good long term choice even after Holcim acquisition?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think so. With Holcim acquiring the stake at one of the highest per tonne valuations for a cement company, I am sure they expect the company to perform far better. Also, with the rate at which our infrastructure looks to grow, I dont think the cement sector will see a problem of excess capacities.
Qamar asked, hi pranav, can u tell me about the future prospective of Ansal PI
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Ansla had a phenomenal rise over the past few years. At some point it was over valued and corrected. I would still opt for a DLF or a Unitech.
Sri asked, Hi Pranav, is it good to invest in UCO Bank [Get Quote] at this moment?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think some of the smaller public sector banks are available at decent PE ratios and surely could be looked at. UCO bank is surely one of them.
gauravbe asked, At what price should I buy ABB and Reliance Capital [Get Quote]?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, It depends on your term for investments. If you are a longer term player you could look at the stocks even today.
KSRAO asked, What ails the pharma sector? No hope in sight. Please comment particularly in relation Cipla, Ranbaxy [Get Quote] and Dr Reddy's Lab.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, The pharma sector had virtually not participated in the recent rally that we witnessed up until last month when the correctional phase began. From the three stocks that you mention I like Dr. Reddy.
NS asked, Pranav - what is your view about investing in Indian equity through ETF?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, ETF's are Exchange Traded Funds like a Morgan Stanley. We still don't have a large base of such funds. So once we do have them then you could look at them.
Zubin asked, Hello! I have invested in L & T, ACC, ICICI Bank [Get Quote], Relience Communication. Are these scripts good with a two year view perspective?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, They all are excellent picks and especially witha two year time frame. I think you should make handsome returns.
VENUGOPAL asked, hi Sanghvi, Can I hold the ITC,RNRL,WELSPUN GUJARAT,SBI & MOSERBAER for long term investments?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think you have a decent mix of frontline and mid cap. You should see decent returns in the long term.
brij asked, I want to invest in mutual funds Is it right time to do
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, When the markets correct most of the Equity based FUnds' NAV's are also pretty low. It would be a good time to get in at those times in quality MF which are diversified or growth funds.
kaushik asked, i have bought 400 shares of ICRA at 1087/- what is the prospect of this co.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, ICRA looks to grow steadily and give decent returns. It is one of the leading credit rating companies.
sharad asked, hi i have bought icici@826 , tisco @572 and idbi @120 .What do u say should i hold or sell
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Yes hold surely.
Mahesh asked, Hi Sir, I am a long term investor. I have HCC 200 shares @ Rs. 99/-. Can I hold or sell at current level? Pl. advise.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think HCC has large plans for the future. You could hold on.
Prabhu asked, What is the future of TECHM in next one month?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, In the next one month I think the stock should remain an underperformer as the Dollar does not look to appreciate substantially from these levels.
swaraj asked, Why the Share market is called the "Bull and Bear run"
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, As the markets face upsides and downsides. After every bullish rally one sees a bearish period.
AKJAIN asked, HELLO SIR PLEASE TELL ABOUT SUGAR STOCK
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think the government will have to do more for the sugar sector to bail them out of the turmoil they are facing. I don't see a huge mis match in the demand and supply gap for the sugar stocks to rally.
PRANAV SANGHAVI says, Sorry I had a technical snag at my end. I am back for a few minutes.

Patience asked, I have purchased Infosys at 2150, Wipro at 595 and H. Unilever at 245 with a 5 year time horizon. Pls advise if hold or cut losses
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Unfortunately you have purchased all the stocks are substantially high rates. It may take a very long time for them to see those prices. You will have to wait for a long time.
devang asked, is this bull market is over?what is the idea or suggestion ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I dont think our economy has started to slow down as yet. I think if we continue our GDP growth of over 8.5% we should see a longer bull rally. But no bull rally can be one sided and has to witness corrections whether for local factors or global ones.
Patience asked, What are prospects of Reliance Petroleum [Get Quote] when the refinery opens?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think once the commercial production begins the stocks should move up. It has been gradually moving up over the last 6 months.
arun asked, It has become a ritual for the stock markets to fall and raise every two months. Even their daily trading/transactions have rather become violent than vilatile. In such a scenario, do you think, it is advisable to stick to stock market for investment purposes? Or it has become a market for pure speculation and entertainment?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Yes the markets have been extremely volatile and day trading has become virtually impossible. But day trading is not a healthy way to invest into the markets. One must always take longer term views to meaningfully benefit form the markets.
hello asked, is it the right time to buy ICICI bank
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, With a 1 to 2 year time frame surely.
NS asked, Pranav - any views on investing through ETF instead of taking position in individual stocks?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think I already answered that question earlier.
rajiv asked, What is the long term outlook for IFCI- 2 year time frame. I have about a 1000 shares bought at avg price of 9. Please advise
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You are already sitting on a huge profit. I would advise you to book 10% profit and hold the balance 90%.
srinivas asked, how market will close today
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, They look to close flattish with a negative bias.
NS asked, Pranav - what's your take on BSE index value by end of this year? Is it likely to cross 15,000 mark again?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think it has good chances. By then the sub prime issue and also the local Political issue should be resolved and if the corporates give strogn 2nd and 3rd quarter results we could see a higher index.
PRANAV SANGHAVI says, Well its time for me to leave. bye for now and thank you.
