Where is the stock market going? Will it rise further? Or will it crash again? What should a small investor do in such a scenario? Should he hold on to his stocks or sell them? Should he buy stocks now or stay away from the market?

In an hour-long chat on rediff.com on Tuesday, stock market expert Pranav Sanghavi answered readers' queries. Here is the transcript:

PRANAV SANGHAVI says, Good afternoon everyone and welcome to teh chat. Let's begin.

SUPARNA asked, I WANT TO KNOW THE FUTURE OF IFCI
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers,  at 2007-08-08 12:07:09IFCI is inviting various stronger players to bid for a stake sale in the company. It looks to be a turnaround story with the company giving net profits against net losses this year. Although it has NPA issues it also has some inherent investments which could benefit the company immensly. Like it sold a part of its stake in NSE for a whopping Rs. 880 crores recently.
amitdelhi asked, I want to know the 1 year prospectus of RPL.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think by next year the markets will start discounting the stock keeping FY2010 in mind. By 2010 its commercial production will have started so it would deliver good results thereby pushing the stock higher.
sRI asked, Hai Pranav, i gold Nagarjuna Fertiliser @ 24.5/- whether i should hold or quit looking at the present market ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think you could hold. The fertiliser industry will benefit form this years budget. And its effects will show in FY08.
deba asked, Hi Pranav,Plz tell me the future of DLF
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, DLF has delivered fantastic first quarter results. It has given a Rs. 1500 crores odd net profit for the qauarter with a 50% margin to the topline. If you simply mutiply the same with 4 quarters you get a net profit figure for the year of Rs. 6000 crores thereby giving it an EPS of around Rs. 40. I think the company might outperform that figure too and I am bullish on the stock.
vj asked, What about IQMS a very small share? Is RNRL is worth buying?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think RNRL is worth a look at form current levels.
bmahesh asked, Good morning sir, i m having hind rectifier-200,rpl and dlf what to do?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Good afternoon, I think you could continue holding Hind Rectifier and surely hold on to DLF too.
sRI asked, Haiii , what is the future prospect of Infosys [Get Quote] ? i have it @ 1990/- whether to hold or quit ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Today wtih a marginal appreciation in the dollar the Tech index is up by over 4%. I think the industry per se will perform well with growth of over 25% but with a weak dollar their bottomlines might take a hit. Although in the longer term they should find solutions to combat the Ruppee Dollar issue. Infy you could continue to hold.
Dinesh asked, hi, I want to know the future of sona koya steering?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, In the very short term the auto sector has not been performing but once hte interest rates stabilize or go south the auto segment should boom again. Sona should benefit form the auto segment boom and its performance should be in tandem with major auto players.
ashwini asked, ashwini says, I WANT TO KNOW THE 6 MONTHS PROSPECTS OF YES BANK [Get Quote]
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think being a fairly newer player in the banking sector it has far less NPA issues to tackle than some of its older and larger peers. But if it can maintain NIM's over 3.5% they should do well.
anurag asked, how to enter in stock market
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You need to take some courses and then approach a registered broker member of either of the exchanges.
ps asked, Please suggest some good stocks in retail
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You could look at Pantaloon [Get Quote], Pyramid Retail, Bharti with its recent tie up with WalMart. These are just some of the players.
ps asked, aRE infrastructure stocks ver high priced at the moment ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I don't think so. You do have to pick quality stocks within the segment too but if you look at real estate developers also I think a DLF could give you a 25% plus return form current levels in a years time. You could also look at Infrasructure through an indirect route like IDFC [Get Quote] which has double over the past year and looks good even at current levels.
Sudha asked, Pl. also tell about tech stocks like Infosys, TCS [Get Quote], Aptech and Moser Bear. How do u like Sun TV [Get Quote]?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Aptech and to an extent is less dependent on the outcome of the Ruppee appreciation in terms of its topline and bottom line so if the company delivers steadily as they have in the past the stock could surely do well. TCS on the other hand has a large part of its revenues in dollar terms and would be hit by any upswing in the Ruppe rates vs the dollar.
anurag asked, what will be the position SBI [Get Quote] shares
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think SBI has risen sharply over the past couple of weeks. But I still think it is a fundamentally strong stock and with its recent announcement to buy out a bunch of smaller banks with its own cash reserves the stock will only rise further. I would look at acquiring on every dip.
prakash asked, Hi pranav, I want to invest some 20K into stock market , which is better stock
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would need to know your time frame beacuase if it is less than 6 months it could be different stocks as compared to investments for over 12 months.
iba asked, I have 200 shares of eid parry at 152. Whats the future of this share?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, The company is a diversified player with sugar as one of its segments. That segment may not perform in the near future but the other segments look to perform. You could hold on.
Mallik asked, I am planning to buy Mindtree [Get Quote] - please suggest
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Their results of this quarter were below expectation and I would wait for a few other quarterly results before investing.
Saroj asked, Genarally till what period we should keep securities with us?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, As a thumb rule I have seen in my experience the longer you are able to hold a stock the better returns you are likely to get. But it also depends which stock when do you buy them etc.
ps asked, Is bharat electornics good to enter at these levels ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, With a 6 to 12 month outlook yes.
ps asked, IS L n T good to enter at thse levels ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, As and when the markets correct or the stock dips you could look at it.
subrata asked, As a beginer, which are the stocks you suggest to buy at the current market scenario without loss?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would suggest stick with the frontline stocks as when a correction does come like we just witnessed you will be better off beng in frontline large cap index stocks than in mid cap stocks. And stock amrket investments are subject to losses. No one can promise you investment without the caveat of making losses.
ps asked, I want to invest around 2 lacs . Please suggest some 2-3 good stocks.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You could look at L&T, SBI, IDFC, ITC, DLF etc.
koushal asked, Tell me about how to invest in derivatives like spices, oil?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You will have to open an account with a member of the Commodity Exchange.
Alakh asked, I have 85 shares of Deccan Aviation [Get Quote] @ 148/- for one year. What should I do? Hold or quit? Can this share show some profits in the near future?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, They have been making losses. But with the recent UB Group acquisition and the changes they plan to make, one could wait and watch for a couple of more quarters.
Candy asked, PS - WAS YOU ON YESTERDAY HERE?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, No.
ak asked, I am a first time investor in stocks and am a little apprehensive in getting into the market right now. Can you suggest me how I should approach and what stocks I should look at buying. I dont want a long term investment. I am looking at anything between 6 months to a years time as of now.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, If you do not understand the markets I would suggest you take the Mutual Fund route. You could look at and SIP scheme or if you do plan to invest one time then invest when the markets are in a correctional mode. If you are a shorter term player then you must garner knowledge of the markets through courses and take advice from you broker.
stockbeast asked, Are you aware of any website where you can invest on various shares of all the various markets? Am asking about the one stop investment in global markets?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, There are tons of gloabal websites which allows you to invest world over. All the leading players in the world permits you to trade in global markets.
ganesh asked, Hi Pranav, is it a good time to enter LandT, Bhel and IFCI
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Yes.

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, It is a smaller player in the liquor market. UB being the undisputed leader in the game. Radico does have a few popular brands but it is still a small player.
ganesh asked, am currently in loss holding midday multimedia, mysore cement and varun shipping, what shall i do
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Mid-day has remained a laggard and not moved in tandem with its peers in the media segment or the markets. But I think both Mysore Cements [Get Quote] and Varun Shipping have better prospects in the future.
stockbeast asked, How much service charge do the brokers charge for investing in shares ? How much will be the difference if we invest through online sites like icicidirect.com ? Which one would be a good choice? Why ? thanks
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Brokergaes vary from broker to broker. It depends on various factors in terms of client deposits, volumes, services offered etc. But typically it should vary from 0.25% to 0.75% on deliveries. Online sites cut down the transaction costs and thereby the customers get a whole load of services at a cheaper rate. ICICI [Get Quote] offers Demat, Share Trading and Banking all blended in to your account.

abdul asked, Hi Pranav I would like to have your views on DCW i m holding 3000@13.33 thanks
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, DCW is a small player in the PVC, Soda Ash, Caustic Soda markets. It has a steady client base and their growth has nto been satisfactory. Plus they face huge competition from players like Reliance [Get Quote] etc.
sandeep asked, I bought Mahindra & Mahindra @Rs.824/- now the price is
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, i think you could continue to holding M&M. In the longer temr it will perform well. Its stakes in its group companies are also seeing steady apprectiation and also the auto sector looks to pick up over the next few quarters.

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, About 3 weeks back I had said the markets are poised for a correction and that has come through. Now the worst looks to be over with FED and BoJ not changing their rates. So beyond a couple of choppy weeks the market looks to consolidate before the next set of results come.
