India added the highest ever number of telecom subscribers of 6.65 crore (66.51 million) in the financial year 2006-07 since the sector was opened up in 1995 for competition.

This is an annual increase of 58 per cent over the previous year. The subscriber base for telephony services continued its stupendous growth with 39.3 lakh (3.93 million) subscribers being added in March 2007.

A total of 6.65 crore subscribers have been added during the financial year 2006-07 as compared to 4.19 crore (41.91 million) in 2005-06, registering an increase of 58 per cent in annual growth.

This is highest ever increase in subscribers base during a financial year after the opening up of telecom sector for competition, TRAI said on Monday.

The total subscriber base at the end of the fiscal was 20.7 crore (207 million). Wireless services subscriber base increased by 35.3 lakh (3.53 million) in March 2007 as compared with 6.21 million in February 2007. This lower growth in March can be attributed to subscriber verification process.

The total wireless subscribers at the end of March 2007 were (16.6 crore) 166.05 million as compared to (9.87 crore) 98.78 million in March 2006, registering an annual growth of around 68 per cent.

In the wireline segment, a total of 0.40 million subscribers were added during March 2007 as compared to a decline of 0.02 million in February.

Low call charges at below Re 1 a minute, fierce competition and innovative marketing strategies adopted by the operators to lure customers have been cited as the reasons behind this stupendous growth.
