Mobile subscribers will now be able to access intelligent network services like toll free number of other service providers, with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India issuing a regulation that enables all consumers to have access to multi-operator, multi-service Intelligent Network platforms.

The regulations would ensure that specified innovative services made available through IN services will not be restricted to telecom service providers who have deployed the IN platform, but also be available to subscribers of other operators.

At present, consumers are offered a number of innovative services through Intelligent Network deployed by telecom service providers in their network. Free phone or Toll Free Number, Virtual Calling Card for long distance calls, are some of the popular examples of such services.

Some service providers have already started offering IN services for their subscribers. In the existing multi-service, multi-operator environment, these services can only be accessed by subscribers of a specific service provider and are not available to other subscribers, Trai said.

The regulation mandates cellular companies to provide interconnection to all eligible operators so that subscribers of all access providers will have a choice of using the IN services of other mobile operators.
