Bell and Ravi Bopara made a cautious start and scored only 16 runs in the first seven overs before stepping up to play fluent shots.
Bell made 46 from 47 deliveries, with seven boundaries, before he was caught behind off pace bowler Munaf Patel. He added 79 runs for the opening wicket with Bopara.
