South African fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Andre Nel [Images] took two wickets each to put New Zealand [Images] under pressure on the first day of the second Test on Friday.

New Zealand, who won the toss and chose to bat, slumped to 184 for six at tea. Steyn took two for 39 while Nel claimed two for 42.

Paceman Makhaya Ntini [Images] struck in the eighth over of the match when Michael Papps, who scored nine, played away from his body to a wide delivery and edged a catch to Herschelle Gibbs [Images] in the gully.

Craig Cumming and Lou Vincent consolidated in a stand that took New Zealand to lunch without further loss.

Ten balls into the second session Vincent top-edged a pull to a delivery from Steyn and was caught by Paul Harris at mid-on for 33 to end the partnership at 62.

Four overs later, Cumming, who was dropped on 37 before lunch, missed with a hook shot off Steyn and was struck on the cheekbone.

Cumming retired hurt on 48 not out and was taken to hospital for x-rays.

In his next over Steyn trapped Scott Styris in front for three.

Nel first struck in the 10th over before tea when he had Ross Taylor smartly caught in the gully by Ashwell Prince for 17.

Stephen Fleming [Images] stood firm through much of the drama for his 43, which ended when he slashed a ball from Jacques Kallis [Images] to be caught by Prince at backward point.

Nel bowled what became the last ball of the session, which Brendon McCullum edged to AB de Villiers at third slip to be dismissed for 13.

Daniel Vettori [Images] was 13 not out at tea.
