The Indian cricket team was hit by an injury scare ahead of its tour of Bangladesh, with Sachin Tendulkar suffering a right ankle sprain on Wednesday, the first day of the conditioning camp in Kolkata.

The injury put a question mark on his participation in the Test series, though the team management said it is not serious and the extent of damage would be known only on Thursday.

The Indian team also had to contend with a piece of bad news from Hyderabad, with V V S Laxman not reporting for the camp after being down with gastroenteritis.

Tendulkar twisted his ankle while negotiating a bouncer from S Sreesanth in the afternoon session at the Eden Gardens. The ageing Mumbaikar ducked awkwardly to the bouncer and lost his balance. He was immediately attended to by team physio John Gloster, and after initial treatment limped out of the ground to the dressing room.

The team's administrative manager, Surendra Bhave, later told newspersons that Tendulkar was being given ice treatment by Gloster and the therapy would continue till Thursday morning.

"He will review the situation in the morning and then we will know the extent of the injury and whether the batsman can take part in the camp tomorrow. But I think it is not that serious," Bhave said, adding there is no need for an X-ray.

There was uncertainty about when and whether Laxman would join the camp after he informed the BCCI and the team's cricket manager, Ravi Shastri, about his indisposition.

"I have no information on his state of recovery. When he joins the camp will depend on the improvement in his condition," Bhave said.

The duo still have time to recover for the Bangladesh trip as they are selected only for the Test series, which begins on May 18.

The Indian team will leave for Bangladesh on May 7 and play three ODIs on May 10, 12 in Mirpur, and May 15 in Chittagong, where the first Test will also be played from May 18.
