Controversial Telugu Desam Party legislator TV Rama Rao, who is facing a case of alleged rape and murder, is likely to be arrested by the Crime Branch's Criminal Investigation Department.
Five girls from Kerala have given a statement to the CID, alleging sexual harassment and attempted rape by the legislator. The Kerala government has also raised the issue with the government of Andhra Pradesh and the central government.
Kerala's health minister T K Shrimati has addressed letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, demanding a thorough probe in the matter. She demanded that stringent action should be taken against the legislator.
Meanwhile Rama Rao, who was admitted to hospital during his fast unto death against alleged harassment by the state government, was discharged on Sunday. The police had forcibly moved him to the Yashodha hospital in view of his worsening condition.
Rama Rao has claimed that this was a conspiracy by the state's Congress government to eliminate him politically. "I will face the situation and foil this conspiracy", he told the media.
"The government has booked the case against me in a systematic manner and to prove the false allegations, they are bringing new people forward," he said. He alleged that some Congress leaders from West Godavari district were involved in the matter.
Rama Rao complained that he had received threatening calls, but they could not "deter my fight for justice.".
Rama Rao is a legislator from Kovvur assembly constituency in West Godavari district and he runs a college of nursing and other institutions in Nidadvole town. The police had booked a case of alleged rape and murder against him on June 14 and later the case was transferred to the CID.
