Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly turns 37 today (Wednesday, July 8).
The Bengal batsman is statistically India's most successful Test captain to date, winning 21 out of 49 tests he captained. He also led the team into the 2003 World Cup finals, where India came second best to Australia.
A prolific one-day batsman, Ganguly has 11, 363 runs to his credit in 311 matches (@ 41.02) since making his debut against the West Indies in 1992. Besides, he also has 100 ODI wickets to his credit.
His Test record is equally formidable - 7, 212 runs in 113 Tests (@ 42.17).
In October last year, Ganguly announced that the home Test series against Australia would be his last. The left-hand batsman played in each of the four-Tests, scoring 324 runs (@ 54.00).
However, in his last Test innings, he was dismissed for a first-ball duck.
In the Nagpur Test, with India needing one wicket to win (they were already assured of a series win), the incumbent captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, in a fine gesture allowed Ganguly to lead the side in the field one last time.
