We, as a nation, as a people, have just lived through another 365 days. We are, as a nation, as a people, one year older.

The real test of "living", though, is this: not how many days you have ticked off on the calendar, but how many of those days were memorable, and why?

When you leaf through your mental calendar, what pages do you find your fingers stopping at?

The successes -- as for instance a skyrocketing Sensex, or the sight of 15 young men who symbolised the can-do spirit when they went out as underdogs and came back with a World Cup in cricket's latest format?

Or the failures -- as in the dozen or so major terrorist attacks that tore through the nation's fabric and underlined, in blood spilt and lives lost, the continued failure of the state to provide safety and security to all its citizens?

Or could it be a person, or persons, who somehow sums it all up -- an Ambani becoming the richest person in the world, and thus alerting us to what is possible, say, or a Sunita Williams breaking records in space, and thus cueing us into the incredible potential that resides in each of us?

We are a composite of both -- our successes and our failures; yet it is the nature of minds, of memories, that we invariably home in on one single incident, one image, one facet of life as we lived it, and use it to define our time.
