Sensex sheds 10% in 5 days

The Sensex opened marginally (20 points) higher at 14,313. Selective buying in morning trades saw the index move up to a high of 14,433.

A fresh round of selling in noon trades saw the index slip into the negative zone. The index, thereafter, staged a sharp pull-back only to tumble deeper into red at the closing bell.

The index touched a low of 13,991 - down 443 points from the day's high. The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 187 points at 14,106.

In the process, the index has now shed over 10% (1,591 points) in the last five trading sessions.

The NSE Nifty ended with a loss of 75 points at 4,191.

Index Shakers. . .

Hindustan Unilever slumped 5.3% to Rs 215. Tata Steel [Get Quote] plunged 4.6% to Rs 711.

NTPC tumbled 4% to Rs 156. ONGC [Get Quote], Larsen & Toubro and Ambuja Cements dropped over 3.5% each to Rs 855, Rs 2,311 and Rs 81, respectively.

HDFC Bank [Get Quote] shed 3.3% at Rs 1,060. Grasim [Get Quote] and Infosys [Get Quote] slipped 3% each to Rs 2,083 and Rs 1,793, respectively.

Reliance Communications [Get Quote] and Hindalco [Get Quote] declined over 2.5% each to Rs 475 and Rs 145, respectively.

ACC, ICICI Bank [Get Quote] and ITC dropped over 2% each to Rs 592, Rs 705 and Rs 191, respectively.

Mahindra & Mahindra and Wipro [Get Quote] were also down over 2% each at Rs 537 and Rs 470, respectively.

HDFC and Ranbaxy [Get Quote] rallied 2.3% each to Rs 2,266 and Rs 525, respectively.

Reliance and BHEL also surged over 2% each to Rs 2,066 and Rs 1,391, respectively.

Jaiprakash Associates [Get Quote] advanced over 1% to Rs 155.

Most Active Counters

Reliance Capital [Get Quote] topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 454 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 342 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 184 crore), Anu Labs (Rs 178.50 crore) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs 174.80 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources [Get Quote] led the volume chart with trades of around 1.40 crore shares followed by IFCI (1.32 crore), Reliance Petroleum [Get Quote] (Rs 1.05 crore), Chambal Fertilisers (99.15 lakh) and Ispat Industries [Get Quote] (84 lakh).
