Did Infosys Technologies try to acquire Europe's largest IT services giant, Capgemini?

Comments made by the Bangalore-headquartered software major's chief executive officer and managing director S Gopalakrishan at a press conference in Bangalore on Wednesday left many guessing.

Asked if the Nasdaq-listed firm would announce acquisition of Capgemini soon, Gopalakrishnan said: "We cannot comment on rumours. So all I can say is that as part of the company's strategy, we do look at acquisitions. It (the company to be acquired) has to meet our criteria. They want to be acquired. If they don't agree, we can't acquire."

He said no company can comment on potential acquisition until and unless the deal is through. Making a general statement, he said: "We are looking at acquisitions."

Speculation was rife last month that Infosys [Get Quote] is mulling a bid to buy Capgemini.

Infosys had cash and cash equivalents, including investments in liquid mutual funds, of Rs 6,442 crore (Rs 64.42 billion) as on June 30, 2007.
