The government has asked major private carriers like Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways [Get Quote] to clarify whether they collect fuel surcharge from passengers in the name of taxes.

Objections have been raised by passengers as also some members of Parliament that private carriers were clubbing this surcharge along with taxes.

The fuel surcharge, which actually goes to the airlines' kitty to meet the rising fuel costs, was increased from Monday to Rs 1,650 per ticket by all major carriers.

In a letter to Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways, director general civil aviation Kanu Gohain asked them to clarify whether they clubbed fuel surcharge and the Passenger Service Fee (PSF) under a single head called 'Taxes', with 'Basic Fare' being the other component of the ticket cost.

Maintaining that 'Taxes' should actually accrue to the government, Gohain wanted them to clarify the issue to the customers immediately and inform the DGCA.

It is only the PSF of Rs 221 that actually goes to the government and is used to pay for security and other facilities at airports.
