Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called for an urgent need to revamp the entire agriculture extension system in the country through community and private sector participation.
During a review of the agriculture sector in Karnataka on Friday, Dr Singh called upon the state government to utilise the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme funds for improving 'private farm lands of the poor in the arid districts' of the state.
The review meeting, of which even Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar was a part of, identified key thrust areas for the rejuvenation of the farm sector in Karnataka.
The state has made a commitment of achieving additional production of 10 lakh tons of rice, four lakh tons of pulses, five lakh tons of maize and nine lakh tons of oilseeds in the state under National Food Security Mission, Pawar said.
Other goals for Karnataka include setting up seed testing laboratories, taking up expansion of soil testing capacity in each district, focus on areas affected by salinity, alkalinity and water logging, during the 11th plan period, he said.
The state should make efforts to achieve additional milk production of 10.56 ton, meat production of 0.25 lakh ton, egg production of 44.17 lakh ton, inland and marine fish production of 1.20 lakh ton and 0.97 lakh ton respectively, in the livestock and the fisheries sector per annum during the 11th
