'Kapil Sibal is wise man'

We had asked our readers for their opinion about the government's attempts to censor online content. While an overwhelming number of readers condemned such a move, some of our readers supported regulation of online content:

R D: Sibal is a wise man! Freedom of expression does not give one the right to abuse and attack another person's image.
Unless there is mapping between the user names and actual people, there should be regulations.

Hiding behind unreal user names and trying to root hatred among communities is a sure NO NO.

Vijay Sahani: Certainly, anything done with the intention to instigate violence must be banned. On the other hand, free speech should be allowed at all cost.

I guess, most responsible internet companies have a defined policy to filter hate material. Nothing has happened in the recent past for Kapil Sibal to propagate such a regressive policy (except maybe the damage caused to Congress by Anna Hazare's movement).

Aftab: I fully agree that a ban can not and should not be imposed in the internet based communication system. It is neither desirable nor practically feasible.

But we have fanatics all over and some of them are even in India.

If these people use the internet to preach hatred and if there is no mechanism to control it, then there will be a problem.

Satire on politicians, bureaucrats etc are not to be banned but hate messages -- Yes.

Prasad Vemparala: The UPA is intereested in suppressing the opinion of the public and the opposition, manipulating the obliging media and brow beating the opposition media.

They want to divide Indians by religion and caste. They want to sell India to the US and MNCs in the name of FDI investment. Let all of us oppose this for the sake of the future of India, otherwise this will become another Pakistan.

Dilip: Instead of non-acceptable material, Sibal should know that he is not acceptable to Indians. Let him contest elections and we will show him his place.

Subrahmanyam Prata: Whenever Mr Sibal thinks about controlling the media, his party must do some introspection first.

What are they doing? Mr Digvijay Singh always talks about saffron terrorism. Is it proper to abuse one community directly?

Sreenivasan Ramasubramanian: Sonia stumbles, Manmohan mumbles, Chidambaram chatters, Mukherjee mews, Sibal sings.UPA -- United Performing Artists.

Madanmohan Siddhanthi: There is a saying "one who thinks every one is a fool is himself a big fool".

Mahendra Patel: Mr Sibal, you missed one big point about democracy. You and your party were selected to represent us -- the citizen of INDIA.

Thus you serve the citizen of INDIA and not the otherway round.

I do not know others but to me this is a GRAVE MISTAKE.

Manoj Dev: Indira Gandhi's regime collapsed after the then information and broadcasting ministry imposed censorship on press and public speech. But times are different now.

Is this an attempt to divert public attention from some other government or political misdeed?
