Singapore army chief Major General Ravinder Singh met Indian Army chief General Bikram Singh in New Delhi today.

Of Indian-origin, Ravinder Singh is the first non-Chinese Singaporean army in 30 years and the first non-Chinese to hold a significant leadership role in three decades.

He is also Sikh the first in nearly 30 years to be given the force's baton.

Colonel Mancharan Singh Gill was the first ever Sikh and non-Chinese to take up the post in 1982.

On 25 March 2011, Ravinder Singh took over as post from Chan Chun Sing at the age of 41, prior to which he was the deputy secretary of technology in Singapore's defence ministry.

Indian Army chief Bikram Singh meets his counterpart from Singapore in New Delhi

Ravinder Singh joined the Singapore army in 1982. He also served as assistant chief of general staff (plans), head of joint communications and information systems department and chief of staff -- joint staff.

In 2009, he left the service to join the defence ministry. He is the highest-ranking officer to have rejoined Singapore's military after reaching the end of his or her military contract.
