PHOTOS: Hundreds of homes inundated as UK floods spread

Hundreds of homes were swamped by floods along the River Thames in the United Kingdom on Wednesday, with forecasters warning of more bad weather.

British Prime Minister David Cameron warned that stricken communities were "in it for the long haul".

Rail travel between one of Britain's busiest routes from London to the commuter town of Reading was heavily disrupted, reported the AFP

The government has been criticised for being under-prepared to deal with the floods as town and villages along the Thames have been inundated.

More than 1,000 homes along the Thames have been evacuated and the situation is said to worsen with heavy rains and storms forecast.

Around 1,600 troops are on standby to help.

Cameron surveyed the damage to the railway line at Dawlish in southwest England, caused by massive waves crashing against the coastline.
