2 killed in Mumbai train mishap; lakhs stranded

In a freak mishap, a portion of an under-construction bridge and a bulky water pipeline, passing over the Central railway tracks, collapsed on a moving train at Thane in Mumbai, killing two persons and injuring 11, officials said on Friday. Railways said it would take at least 30 hours to completely repair the damaged tracks.

The mishap occurred about 30 km from Mumbai at 1030 am on Friday when an under-construction bridge, adjacent to existing road-overbridge, connecting Thane from east to west, fell on a local train below.

As the bridge collapsed, it also took along a parallel water pipeline which was supported by a steel enforcement. The support gave away due to the impact of bridge collapse and the pipeline also fell on the train.

The pipeline as well as the bridge debris fell on the front coaches of the Kalyan-bound train, officials added.The deceased were identified as R Ramachandra and Subhash Nikam, a motorman and a passenger respectively.

Rail services between Kurla and Thane were disrupted due to the incident, inconveniencing commuters. Railways has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kin of those killed.

Those with grievous injuries would get Rs 1 lakh while Rs 10,000 would be given to commuters who sustained minor
injuries, S Mutgerikar, Chief Public Relation Officer of Central Railway, said.

Two injured are in critical condition, officials said, adding that rescue operations were on and it would take at least 30 hours to restore the train services between Ghatkopar and Thane.

Trains on the Central Line were running only up to Ghatkopar and there were no services to the suburbs beyond that. With repairs on the line expected to take over 30 hours, lakhs of commuters, including those returning from work, would have to find alternative ways to reach the suburbs beyond Ghatkopar.

Among the trains cancelled due to the accident were the 1009 Mumbai-Pune Singdhar Express, 2109 Mumbai-Manmad Express, 2125 Mumbai-Pune Pragati Express and the 2123 Mumbai-Pune Deccan Queen Express.
