UP expert Nazarwala: Maya tally in double digits

Last updated on: January 30, 2012 16:32 IST
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on a Bahujan Samaj Party flag

Five years ago, Nazarwala made history when he predicted on Rediff.com that Mayawati would be victorious in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, winning over 184 seats.

With UP heading into a critical assembly election, Nazarwala returns to Rediff.com and writes of a mandate squandered at the altar of megalomania and vanity.

His prediction for 2012: Mayawati's tally will be in double digits.

Mayawati is losing the goodwill of her voter masses in Uttar Pradesh.

Brazen corruption from the lowest village level right up to the highest level has shocked her admirers. Initially taxing and then axing ministers is her patented forte.

Her reported brazen acquisition of bungalows, hotels and diamonds, and her brother Anand Kumar's alleged 300 bogus companies etc, will surely come home to roost.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya and Congress leader Digvijay Singh, the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation are waiting to pounce upon her.

Upper caste atrocities at the village level are not perceived by the Dalits to have substantially decreased during Mayaraj. These are non-pardonable because she is their apni hi behenji (own sister).

Mayawati cannot be saved from becoming history

Last updated on: January 30, 2012 16:32 IST
Nazarwala says Mayawati quickly succumbed to the same ill that plagues politicians needing funds

Prejudiced about Brahmin history, she misread the UP Brahmin's psyche.

Myopic Mayawati extended disproportionate support to her upstart Brahmin career advocate, simply because he was handling her disproportionate assets case!

This Kanyakubja career advocate has no mass following among the Brahmins. The powerful Saryuparins and Mathura Chaubes are outraged.

Mayawati was trusted and voted to power with a stunning victory in the last assembly election.

After coming to power, to her voters' utter dismay, Mayawati quickly succumbed to the same ill that plagues politicians needing funds. Plus, she patronised those very same goondas that her predecessor Mulayam Singh Yadav had wooed earlier.

Her statue-cum-park obsession may get for her a mention in history, but cannot save her from becoming history.

Dalits are searching for the hidden virtues of Mayawati's beloved parents, who too have been glorified and immortalised into statues.

Mayawati refuses to sign orders to escape responsibility

Last updated on: January 30, 2012 16:32 IST
A statue of Mayawati

The voter felt cheated and let down. She appeared to be just a bigger Tweedledum than Tweedledee Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Fortuitously, the chief election commissioner has come to her rescue and helped her resurrect some of her fading image by quixotically ordering the draping of statues, removing huge hoardings etc.

Parkinson's Law of Mediocrity -- our life will be full of mediocrity, always being too busy to do what really matters -- applies to her.

She apes Indira Gandhi and refuses to sign explicit orders with a view to escape responsibility.

Poor, luckless, P L Punia and other IAS officers can vouch for this fact. Her signatures are so rare, autograph collectors hunt for treasuring them!

Her IAS advisors lack the guts to proffer sane advice to 'Madam.' Who wants to bell this cat and get clawed?

Her loyal pilot advisor Shashank Shekhar Singh lacks the will and the requisite field experience to help her out of the messy situation she has landed herself in.

Imperious isolation and arrogant inaccessibility

Last updated on: January 30, 2012 16:32 IST
There has been negative projection of her unparalleled actions for which she richly deserves applause

Today, she cannot wish away her past. Neither can she wash away her caste.

The combined upper castes of UP have neither reconciled nor fully overcome their past superiority complex against the Dalits.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate, the Supreme Court, sacked BSP minister Babu Singh Kushawaha, P L Punia, and many others will not permit her to escape.

Seasoned bureaucrats sacrificed professional ethics at her altar by brazen sycophancy. Imperious isolation and arrogant inaccessibility have marred and tarred her image.

There has been lacklustre and ineffective advertising, pathetic and unimaginative PR and negative projection of her otherwise unparalleled decisions/actions/achievements for which she richly deserves applause and kudos.

Take, for instance, the Jamuna Expressway, the enlistment of 35,000 policemen sans corruption, no riots for five years in communally sensitive UP, peaceful everyday life for the common man, regular monitoring of accountability of field staff, Dalit facilities being upgraded, immortalising neglected Dalit heros, beautifying Lucknow and so on.

Mayawati's PR teams made millions by hoodwinking her

Last updated on: January 30, 2012 16:32 IST
Dalit icons in bronze: Mayawati and her mentor Kanshi Ram flank Dr B R Ambedkar

Recall those full-page national newspaper ads which are appreciated only by bhelpuri and moong-phali vendors?

Here is yet another ludicrous example.

Just sample her 100 feet x 20 feet jumbo-sized, 15,151-worded hoardings in small fonts. Her portrait mocked at you, till recently, from every nook and corner she normally traversed in Lucknow and elsewhere.

None of her illiterate voter paused to look at them, let alone 'read' them.

Except this misinformed woman who believed in their impact and utility. Mayawati carrying a handy personal mirror would prove more economical to all!

Remember how you recoiled and sniggered at her robot-like 'entry-recitation-exit' from her impersonal media briefings.

Her PR teams have made their millions and hoodwinked her heartlessly.

Mayawati has realised her mistakes, but now it is too late

Last updated on: January 30, 2012 16:32 IST
The BSP sign says it all: Maya for PM!

Mayawati seems to exult in losing friends and alienating influential people. She is struggling hard to regain her fast eroding vote-share.

An ego-entombed, insecure and isolated dictator, Mayawati has realised her mistakes, but now it is too late.

Alas, anti-incumbency wave has set in for the prime ministerial aspirant.

Like Sachin Tendulkar, the Century seems elusive in her Election 2012 Test match.

Her exalted majesty's triple-digit perch shall be reduced to precariously dwindling and shrinking double-digits!
